This process makes provision Vertical as well as Horizontal succession.

Colour coding:  

Green implies a person is ready to move into the role  
                     
Brown implies a person is not ready yet for the role    
                  
Brown turning green implies growth into the role will happen and time to grow into the role can be specified  
                     
Purple implies the person probably will never grow into the role   
                    
Blue implies the person is already beyond the role
